Alterative door sensors with a Smart Lock?

As I understand it, the Nuki Door Sensor is a surface mounted Bluetooth device that communicates the door status (open, closed) TO a Smart Lock.

Is this the only door sensor that is compatible with a Smart Lock?

I asked in the Mattter API forum about “Using/binding a Matter contact sensor?”
about the possibility of using a Matter device from the Sense by MACO range for
concealed installation. It was suggested that it would not be possible.

Is there any mechanism, current or planned, to communicate the door status from
a non-Nuki sensor TO a Smart Lock?

The sensor need not be a Matter device. It could use other technologies (eg. Zigbee) or even an intelligent camera monitoring the door to determine the door status.

Just to be clear, I am not asking to obtain the door status FROM a Smart Lock.

It would be great if nuki would allow this. Currently, the only way to set the door status is with their sensor, which is a shame for situations with other requirements. Not sure why they wont allow the bridge to set this (other than that they want to force sales of their devices)

This might be possible in the future when major platforms support Matter binding.

The lock could translate the status of the contact sensor to the DoorState. The problem is, in this case, we would only have open and closed, but not all of the other states like ajar or jammed.

It would require a Matter device that looks like a typical contact sensor, but reports all the DoorStates, not just a binary sensor.

Fun fact: most - if not all - platforms don’t even support the door state of Matter locks, like the Nuki.

So… It’s complicated…
