The smart lock currently works in WPA2/3 environments, but is not compatible with WPA3-only networks. As a consequence, the lock is incompatible with WiFi 6E (6 GHz) which mandates WPA3 and PMF.
Features
The smart lock should be able to connect to WPA3-only networks.
Reason
Anyone with a WiFi 6E compatible phone (e.g. iPhone 15) and a compatible router / access point who wants to benefit from WiFi 6E has to add an additional SSID for WPA2/3 just for the smart lock. This compromises network security and add beacon overhead which takes up airtime (slowing the network down for everyone).
After the ratification of WiFi 7 on January 8, 2024, the first access points implementing the final standard are already available for purchase (e.g. UniFi U7 Pro). This will likely increase demand for this feature (which isn’t new at all: WPA3 was introduced in 2018).
WPA3 is a 6 year old industry standard by now. It’s pervasive and even cheap household electronics like my toothbrush (an Oclean X Ultra) support it flawlessly.
WPA3 is a also a mandatory requirement for “Wi-Fi-certified” devices, so omitting it from a “premium” product in 2024 seems like an odd decision.
