Nuki Ultra - Matter Problems

I got my Nuki Ultra last week, and I have a serious issue with Matter activation on the Android app and IOS app.

Some of my troubleshooting steps are below ;

I’ve now tested the Nuki Ultra with a combination of the following.

  • 3 x different routers. All the top-of-the-line WiFi 6 and WiFi 7 routers.
  • All have MDNS and are IPv6 enabled and tested.
  • 3 x different matter hubs (Google TV streamer, Aqura M3 and Homepod Mini); note I’ve disabled the unused hubs to stop thread interference.
  • 2.4 GHz WiFi only on the routers for connection to the phone and lock.
  • Phones used ; Android S25 Ultra, iPhone 13

All other matters, devices are connecting and registering to the hubs correctly, including thread devices. I have added several new thread devices, and they are working fine.

The Ultra is the outlier.

This is most definitely a Nuki issue. I’ve hard reset the lock, and it makes no difference. So it’s either faulty, requires a firmware update, or it’s a server issue at Nuki’s side.

Nuki Smart Lock Pro

Despite all these issues, I am pleased with my Ultra and ordered a second Smart Lock Pro for my back door. I received that device today.

Strangely, that device, the Nuki Smart Lock Pro, has been added to Matter using my Aqura Hub M3 via Thread on my Unifi network with a Firewalla Gold Pro Router on the first attempt. So this is an issue with the Ultra.

I have continued to try to get the Ultra to work with Matter, but I’m still experiencing the same issue.

Possible solutions

My Nuki Ultra is either faulty, needs a firmware update or needs a firmware reset…

Any suggestions welcome!

Any update on this? I just got brand new Nuke Ultra and cannot activate Matter at all using iOS app.

Everything else seems to be working fine, just cannot activate Matter - I’m getting ‘Activation Failed’ error

  • My Nuki Ultra is on latest v5.6.9 firmware,
  • I’m using iOS Nuki app (iPhone 15 Pro Max +Apple TV + HomePod mini),
  • my Nuki is in thread, wifi and bluetooth (both iPhone and HomePod) range.

Update: I tried again a few days later and I was able to activate Matter over Thread (this time without any issues). I have no idea why it didn’t work on day 1.

At the end everything is working fina - I’m very happy with product.
