Enable NFC Key Fob & Card Support for Keypad 2 NFC

Keypad 2 NFC

Summary

Quick summary what this request is about.

Enable support for enrolling and using standard NFC-compatible key fobs/cards (e.g. MIFARE, NTAG, ISO14443) with the Keypad 2 NFC, in addition to smartphones.

Features

Allow the Keypad 2 NFC to

  • third-party NFC tokens (key fobs, cards, wristbands),
  • Assign permissions to NFC tokens in the same way as entry codes
  • Manage tokens via the app (add/remove, audit, naming, permissions)
  • Support widely used NFC standards (e.g. MIFARE Ultralight, DESFire, NTAG)
  • Optionally allow UID-based or secure-sector authentication modes
  • Provide audit logs for NFC token usage (like keypad codes)

This would bring NFC token functionality in line with existing keypad PIN management.

Reason

Currently, Nuki Keypad 2 NFC only supports NFC via smartphones, which limits its usefulness in business and shared-access environments.

For business use cases:

  • Official Nuki Fob devices are significantly more expensive (£55 per fob)
  • Replacement costs are high when fobs are lost
  • There is no ability to integrate with existing NFC ecosystems

By contrast, NFC key fobs/cards:

  • Cost £1–£5 each
  • Are widely deployed in offices, gyms, co-working spaces, and residential buildings
  • Are already used in other access systems such as Paxton and Ubiquiti’s UniFi Access

This feature would significantly expand Nuki’s viability as a lightweight access control system.

Examples

How would you like to use this feature?
List all usecases you can think of!

SME Office Access Control

  • Retrofit access control where wired systems such as Paxton, HID are not feasible
  • Employees use cheap NFC fobs instead of expensive proprietary remotes
  • Easy onboarding/offboarding without reissuing physical keys

Contractors & Temporary Access

  • Issue temporary NFC fobs to contractors, cleaners, or maintenance staff
  • Revoke instantly without needing to collect keys
  • Avoid sharing PIN codes between multiple users

Multi-Tenant Buildings / Co-working Spaces

  • Each tenant gets NFC fobs/cards
  • Easier than managing multiple PIN codes
  • Scales better as occupancy grows

HMO / Rental Properties

  • Landlords issue NFC fobs to tenants
  • Replace lost fobs cheaply
  • No need to change locks or reset codes frequently

Integration with Existing Access Ecosystems

  • Businesses already using UniFi Access or similar systems could reuse the same NFC tokens
  • Reduces friction and duplication of credentials

Schools / Training Centres

  • Students use ID cards or NFC wristbands
  • Controlled access to rooms without needing smartphones

Accessibility / Non-Smartphone Users

Ideal for:

  • Elderly users
  • Children
  • Users without smartphones

Security Improvements Over PIN Codes

  • Reduces risk of PIN sharing or observation (shoulder surfing)
  • Enables unique credential assignment per user with audit trails

High-Traffic Entrances

  • Faster “tap-to-unlock” interaction vs entering PINs
  • Improved user flow in busy environments

This feature would significantly expand Nuki’s viability as a scalable, low-cost, retrofit access control solution for multi-user environments.
